Shelburne Farms Photo License

Effective Date: August 1, 2026

Thank you for sharing your photography with Lenses on the Land and Shelburne Farms. This page explains, in plain terms, what you're agreeing to when you upload a photo to this website. We've tried to keep it fair and easy to understand. If anything here is unclear, please contact us and ask before you upload.

1. What You're Agreeing To

By uploading a photograph to this website, you grant Shelburne Farms a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, and perpetual license to use, reproduce, publish, display, and create derivative works from that photograph. In practice, this is most likely limited to things like cropping, resizing, and other adjustments needed for a particular presentation medium (for example, preparing a photo for print versus web); it would not include AI-generated alterations, other manipulation, or any change to the photo's general character. This license covers use on the Shelburne Farms website and social media, in printed materials such as brochures, signage, and publications, on products offered for sale (such as calendars, postcards, or merchandise), and in any other current or future medium where Shelburne Farms shares or promotes its work.

2. You Keep Your Copyright

This is a license, not a transfer of ownership. You remain the copyright owner of your photographs. You are always free to use, sell, publish, or license your own photos elsewhere; granting Shelburne Farms permission to use them does not stop you from doing anything you'd otherwise do with your own work.

3. Attribution

Wherever it is reasonably practical to do so, Shelburne Farms will credit you by the name or attribution you provide in your profile when your photo is used. There are some situations (small-format merchandise, certain social media formats, or collages of many images, for example) where including a full credit line isn't practical. In those cases, we'll still make a good-faith effort to credit photographers collectively (for example, in a linked gallery or "photos by" listing) rather than omitting attribution altogether.

4. No Payment Is Expected

Participation in this program and uploading your photos is voluntary. Unless Shelburne Farms agrees to something different with you in writing, you should not expect payment or other compensation for photos you upload or for their use under this license.

5. Your Promise to Us

By uploading a photo, you're confirming that it's your own original work, that you have the right to grant this license, and that, to the best of your knowledge, using the photo as described above won't infringe on anyone else's rights (for example, another photographer's copyright, or a recognizable person's right to privacy where a release would normally be needed). If a photo of yours turns out to cause a problem in this respect, we ask that you let us know right away so we can address it together.

6. Changing Your Mind

You may ask us at any time to stop using a photo you've uploaded in new or future materials, and we will honor that request going forward. Please understand that we may not be able to recall copies that have already been printed, distributed, or published before your request, for example a brochure already at the printer or a page already indexed by search engines. If you'd like a photo removed, just contact us with the details and we'll take care of it.

7. How Long This License Lasts

This license lasts for as long as you hold copyright in the photo, unless you withdraw it as described in Section 6 above. Withdrawing your license only affects future use; it doesn't undo uses that already happened before your request.

8. Changes to This License

We may update this license from time to time, for example to clarify language or reflect new ways we share photography. Updates will apply to photos uploaded after the change; we won't retroactively expand the rights we have to photos you've already shared without letting you know.

9. Questions

If anything on this page is unclear, or you'd like to discuss how a specific photo of yours may be used, please contact us before uploading. We're glad to talk it through.
